Architecture and History of San Francisco

Few American cities have a history as rich as San Francisco's. Both residents and tourists are drawn to the City's vibrant past, magnificent architecture and colorful characters. Perhaps you are curious about the Barbary Coast Trail or would like to learn more about the Victorians in your own neighborhood. Whatever your interests, you'll find no shortage of available resources:

  • An excellent place to begin an exploration into San Francisco's architecture is the Haas-Lilienthal House at 2007 Franklin Street. This beautifully restored Queen Anne mansion is owned and operated by the San Francisco Architectural Heritage, a member-supported preservation group. It offers tours of the house, as well as a lecture series, neighborhood walking tours, seminars and workshops. The group's Web site also provides information on San Francisco's endangered and extinct structures, details on preservation easements, and access to an online bookshop. Visit them online for tour dates and times or call (415) 441-3000.

  • The San Francisco History Association, "a group dedicated to remembering our City's colorful past, and celebrating its rich culture today," offers an entertaining venue for learning more about local history. Each month the group presents "a talk and slide show from an expert in a particular area of San Francisco history." See their Web site for more details or call them at (415) 750-9986.

  • The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, "preserves, interprets and presents the historical heritage of San Francisco from its variegated natural history to its lively human history." The SFMHS offers monthly slide presentations and lectures, walking tours, exhibits and various special events. In addition, the group's Website provides a wonderfuly comprehensive resource of links covering topics such as "Architecture and Buildings," "Collections," and "Historical Agencies and Museums." If you would like to learn more about your own corner of the City, visit its Web site soon. For further information, call (415) 775-1111.
