What should you do if you see a stray dog or cat nosing around your neighborhood? Call San Francisco’s Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-6364. Remember that a stray could very well be somebody’s lost pet and they might be searching for it. In any case, getting an animal off the street is your humane responsibility.
Keep in mind that loose animals can also be dangerous, so it’s best not to approach one yourself. Deputy ACC officers will know how to handle the situation. They are also trained to deal with sick or injured animals and are on hand 24 hours a day to respond to calls for emergency assistance. If you're bitten, be sure to report the incident to the ACC Bite Division at (415) 554-9422.
What if you have taken in a stray but cannot keep it? The City’s Shelter at 1200 15th Street (at Harrison) has drop-off hours from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily or until 7:00 PM on Wednesdays. Hours for lost-pet and adoption searches are from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM daily or until 7:00 PM on Wednesdays. The shelter is closed on holidays, so it's wise to call them at (415) 554-6364 to confirm availability before visiting.
Also, you should realize that many pets go missing in the confusion of a crisis such as an earthquake. Remember to get your dog licensed: it’s not just the law but it works to ensure you and your pet will be reunited if separated. You may also register your cat with the City. A lifetime registration is only $10.00 and includes a numbered tag on a safe “breakaway” collar.
